Getting Started & How I Work
What exactly does a private administrator/secretary do?
I take care of the complex, time-consuming, or stressful administrative tasks that keep your personal life or small business running smoothly. This ranges from managing household utility accounts, dispute resolution, and home relocation logistics to organising paperwork, preparing executor records, and managing practice or commercial operations.
How do we get started?
We begin with a simple, relaxed conversation—either over coffee at a local café, via a quick video call, or over the phone. We’ll discuss where you’re feeling administrative pressure, what needs tackling, and how I can best support you. From there, I’ll provide a clear, plain-English summary of how we can work together.
Do I have to commit to a long-term contract?
Not at all. I offer flexible options tailored to your needs. You can hire me on an ad-hoc basis for a specific project (like managing a house move or sorting out a utility dispute), or on an ongoing monthly retainer if you prefer regular, dedicated support.
Acting on Your Behalf & Giving Authority
Are you a solicitor, regulated financial adviser, or legally qualified?
No, I am not a solicitor, regulated financial adviser, or legal consultant, and my services do not constitute formal legal or financial advice.
However, none of the practical work I do requires a law degree—it requires exceptional administrative expertise, methodical organization, and practical know-how. With over 15 years of experience in high-level practice management, executive support, and domestic administration, I bring the precise skills needed to untangle complex paperwork. I know how corporate bureaucracies operate, how consumer rights work in practice, and how to systematically catalogue household affairs.
Think of me as your personal administrative project manager: I handle the heavy lifting, persistent advocacy, and meticulous organisation, while leaving formal legal drafting to your solicitor and financial advice to your regulated planner.
How do I give you authority to act on my behalf with companies and suppliers?
To protect your security, companies require formal authorisation before discussing your account with anyone else. We handle this in one of two ways:
-
Letter of Authority (LOA): I will prepare a simple, plain-English Letter of Authority for you to sign. This grants me permission to speak to that specific company on your behalf, request account details, challenge billing errors, or manage services for you.
-
A Quick Verbal Authorization Call: Some companies (particularly banks, major telecom providers, or energy suppliers) insist on hearing directly from the account holder. In these cases, we can sit together and make a brief 2-minute call. You simply verify who you are, give them verbal consent to add me as an authorised contact or representative on the account, and pass the phone to me. Once that initial setup is done, I can handle all future communications independently.
Do I have to sign a separate Letter of Authority for every individual supplier or company?
In short, usually yes—because most large corporate bodies, utilities, and financial institutions require their own specific record of consent to comply with strict data protection laws.
While sending individual letters or making initial setup calls to multiple suppliers can feel like a chore, I manage the entire process for you. I draft all the necessary letters, prepare the paperwork, and organize any required calls in a single, streamlined session so we get it all done at once. Once those authorisations are logged, you won't have to deal with those companies again.
Security, Insurance & Privacy
Are you insured to work in my home or manage my administration?
Yes, completely. I hold comprehensive Professional Indemnity Insurance and Public Liability Insurance. This ensures complete protection and peace of mind whether I am handling administrative logistics, working with confidential documents, or visiting you at home.
How do you protect my personal data and financial confidentiality?
Confidentiality and discretion are the foundations of my business. I am fully registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and adhere strictly to UK GDPR standards. Your personal details, account information, and paperwork are stored securely and are never shared with third parties without your explicit authorization.
What safety and security measures do you have in place?
Your privacy, security, and trust are paramount. In addition to carrying full Professional Indemnity and Public Liability insurance, I am registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) for data protection, adhere strictly to UK GDPR standards, and use encrypted, password-protected systems for all digital records.
What happens to my confidential paperwork or digital credentials?
Any paper records processed on your behalf are returned to you or securely archived according to your instructions. Digital details, account passwords, or personal documents are stored in encrypted, password-protected systems.
Logistics & Locations
What areas do you cover for in-person meetings?
I am based locally and offer in-person consultations, home visits, and café meetings across central and south Somerset. This includes the Chew Valley, Wells, Glastonbury, Street, Castle Cary, Bruton, Wincanton, Wedmore, and surrounding rural villages. Remote administrative support is also available UK-wide.
Can we work together remotely?
Absolutely. Many administrative, digital, dispute, and research projects can be handled entirely remotely using secure online tools, email, and phone calls—wherever you are based.
Will you work on my home computer or bring your own equipment?
Either! I carry my own secure, password-protected laptop for off-site or café meetings. If preferred during a home visit, I am equally comfortable helping you organise files and log in directly on your existing home setup.
Do you charge for travel?

Why Work With Me / Value & Investment
I’ve seen £50 estate planning binders online—why should I hire Somerset Household Admin instead of buying a DIY kit?
A £50 kit only buys you a blank template—it still leaves all the heavy lifting to you. The main reason off-the-shelf DIY binders end up sitting half-empty in a drawer is that tracking down obscure account numbers, sorting through years of paper, and hunting for hidden paperless subscriptions takes dozens of hours of tedious effort.
When you work with Somerset Household Admin, you aren't buying a blank checklist; you are hiring an experienced professional to do the hard work for you. I work alongside you (or independently on your behalf) to physically sort through files, trace obscure online accounts, organize utility details, and compile a fully finished, bespoke master binder. You get complete peace of mind knowing the job is 100% completed, accurate, and ready for your family when they need it most.
I’m a sole trader—isn't hiring admin support an expense I should avoid while keeping overheads low?
Every hour you spend chasing unpaid invoices, sorting receipts, or wrestling with inbox clutter is an hour you aren't billing clients or growing your business. Outsourcing your administrative backlog isn't an added cost; it is a strategic way to buy back your fee-earning time. By handing over the tedious office logistics to an experienced administrator, you eliminate evenings spent on paperwork and keep your operation running smoothly and profitably.
I employ a small domestic team (housekeeper, gardener, care staff). What is the value of hiring an administrator for this?te an overview
Managing household staff comes with significant legal and compliance obligations—from employment contracts and right-to-work checks to payroll records, workplace pensions, and health & safety protocols. Compliance holes in domestic employment are remarkably common and can lead to costly legal disputes or tax penalties. I ensure your household employer setup is fully compliant, up-to-date, and organized, protecting both you and your staff while taking the day-to-day management off your plate.
Why pay a professional to resolve a billing dispute or corporate error instead of calling them myself?
Large corporations often rely on two things: customer fatigue and the fact that most consumers aren't fully familiar with their formal statutory rights. Between automated call queues, generic auto-responses, and technical jargon, it is easy to feel worn down into giving up on money or refunds you are genuinely owed.
Challenging an incorrect bill or poor service effectively requires time, clear evidence, and a firm understanding of consumer protections. When you hire me, you stop wasting your valuable energy fighting bureaucracy. I step in as your independent advocate, build a clear chronological audit trail, reference the relevant regulations, and maintain formal, persistent communication until a fair resolution is reached.
